Grades 5-8 Extra-Curricular Activities
Academic success for each of our students is the foremost goal of the Oxford Middle School. We also believe that participation in extra curricular activities is a valuable and positive learning experience that contributes to the total development of the student.
Students may elect to participate in:
Student Council Yearbook Club
All Sports Jazz Band
Science Club Safety Patrol
Grades 5/6 Intramurals
Clubs and Activities
Student Council - Officers of Student Council are elected in September. Students in seventh or eighth grade may run for the office of Secretary or Treasurer, eighth grade students are eligible to run for the offices of President and Vice President. Each homeroom in all grades will elect a representative and an alternate to serve on Student Council. Student Council is a very active part of the middle school. Student Council sponsors most of the monthly dances, organizes spirit week, and coordinates the Thanksgiving and Christmas events. Officers and representatives are expected to attend weekly meetings.
Yearbook - Students in grades 5-8 are eligible to participate on the yearbook staff. Students that participate in yearbook are expected to commit time and energy to support the publication of the yearbook. Taking pictures, organizing, and editing are important tasks necessary for a successful yearbook.
Safety Patrol - Students in grade 6 may choose to serve on the Safety Patrol as crossing guards. These students have the option to participate in the Crossing Guard trip to Washington D.C. in the spring. Students who chose to involve themselves in the Safety Patrol Program are expected to commit at least two weeks to guard the crosswalks in front of the Middle School.
Interscholastic Athletics – All students in 7th and 8th grade are eligible to participate in a variety of interscholastic athletics. The year is broken down into 4 seasons, and students who choose to participate can play four different sports including field hockey, soccer, football, basketball, wrestling, volleyball, softball, baseball, and track. Interscholastic athletics are a privilege, and student/athletes are expected to maintain their grades and behavior. Students who choose to participate are expected to also complete the season they start. Participating in sports is a commitment to the coach and the other team members. Parents and athletes should become familiar with the Middle School Eligibility Policy.
Athletic Participation - One of the goals and focuses of the Middle Level Program is to develop the whole child. Never is this as important as in the 5th through 8th grades. We strongly encourage participation in activities outside of the school day. Sports are an important part of the overall program of the middle school. Participating in athletics teaches cooperation, teamwork, problem solving, and commitment. Students who begin participation are encouraged to complete the season. Once a team has been established, it is very difficult for the other team members and the coach to depend on them. Making a commitment means going to practice, listening, striving to improve, and maintaining homework and good academic skills.
There may come an opportunity where you as parents have questions about your child’s participation on a team or in an activity. The same procedures are suggested as in contacting a teacher. Please contact the coach with your concerns. It is strongly advised that you do not contact them after a game. Situations that arise during a game are better discussed the next day. If there continues to be concerns, contact the Middle School Principal, then the Athletic Director, Superintendent, Board of Education.
