Probation
= Any student failing one or more credits for any 5-week marking period will be on academic probation. During probation, the student may participate in extra-curricular activities. In
order to ensure they maintain eligibility, students should attend all
sessions provided for AIS or instructional assistance during and beyond
PLP.
= Students placed on academic probation will be notified when report cards are issued.
= If requested by a parent or guardian, current status of the student will be indicated by weekly Progress Reports.
Academic Ineligibility
= If,
at the end of the five-week probationary period, the student is
failing the same class for 10 weeks, or failing 2 or more classes, he
or she will become ineligible for extra-curricular activities. The period of ineligibility will begin the Monday following the distribution of reports cards.
= Academic ineligibility means that a student is suspended from activity.
= If it is determined that a student is ineligible during the try-out period for a team or activity, the student’s privilege of participating will be denied.
= The
student may have academic eligibility reinstated if he/she achieves a
passing average in coursework and has a hearing during which
eligibility is reinstated. Request for a hearing must be presented by the student to the principal or school counselor.
- Any student may use an Academic Improvement Plan as part of their high school studies.
- Since
all extracurricular activities operate under different
circumstances it will be at the discretion of the coach or advisor
to determine how long an ineligible student is to be carried
before dismissal occurs. The student is still ineligible to participate in practices and events.
Reinstatement of Eligibility
- Once
a student is participating in an extracurricular activity,
academic ineligibility does not constitute immediate dismissal. Participation
includes academic and athletic competitions, meetings, trips,
dances, performances, peer mediation, publications and any
non-academic activity.
- At each marking period, if the student’s report card grades have improved to the passing level, the student’s extracurricular will be reinstated.
- If
after ten school days into the marking period, the student is
able to see that grades are at a passing level during the term of
ineligibility, he or she may request a hearing to determine if
eligibility status should be reinstated.
- The committee will determine the student’s eligibility status. The conference may consist of the following members:
Building Principal
Athletic Director
Coach or Advisor
Guidance Counselor
Teacher(s) of failing subjects
Student(s)
Parent(s)
